Red Giant: A New Actor-Musician Musical
by Cathryn Wake
JULY 2026
Living Room Productions is proud to co-produce Red Giant, a new actor-musician musical from Broadway actor, musician, and songwriter Cathryn Wake.
THE SHOW
The Roman gods, played by women, find out the truth of what will happen to the sun: that it will become a red giant star, engulfing and destroying their planets. Told through a rock score with actor-musicians, the show explores queer love, authoritarian abuse of power, and the endurance of female friendship. This show assumes that the Romans got most of it wrong; Red Giant is a new narrative of the gods we named the planets after.
THE STORY
Mercury, Venus, Terra, Mars, and Ceres, longtime friends but recently distant, gather to open a letter from Jupiter, the arrogant and power-hungry king of the Gods. They learn that the sun will become a red giant star, soon to swallow their planets - “tough shit”. They also learn that everyone else is gone; they are alone in the solar system. Immediately these immortals face their own mortality: If their planets are gone, do they also cease to be? Do they have a chance to change the course of fate?
THE CREATOR
Cathryn Wake is a Broadway actor, musician, and songwriter based in New York. Her actor-musician musical in development, Red Giant, is the 2025 recipient of the Jeffrey L. Nissen Arts Education & Development Fund Spark Grant. Alongside collaborator Neil Reynolds, Cathryn composed the rock score to the play Caring For The Dead by Kati Schwartz which was a finalist for the Eugene O'Neill National Music Theatre Conference.
As a stage actor, Cathryn made her Broadway debut in the original cast of Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812. Cathryn has specialized in originating roles in world premiere productions, including Jean Kerr, wife of Senator Joseph McCarthy, in Joe DiPietro’s Conscience (George Street Playhouse), World War I veteran Louise LeBreton in The Hello Girls (Off-Broadway), Vicky/Victor/Vivian in 53% Of (Second Stage), women’s suffrage leader Alice Paul in The Suffragist (GBPAC), and Mara in Well-Intentioned White People (Barrington Stage).
