Our Story
from artist potlucks to the stage
Living Room Productions began in the summer of 2023 with a potluck.
Ten or fifteen people gathered at Ellyn’s apartment in Brooklyn, a green tiled fireplace served as the stage with candles arranged as footlights.
There were live musical performances, readings of original works in progress, Laura painted a still life that someone took home at the end of the night. Food everywhere, no strict agenda, really. Just artists in a room together, sharing work and holding space for each other. It felt like exactly the kind of gathering the name was always meant to evoke.
The energy in the room felt like the beginning of something, and it was. Living room readings started leading to staged readings, then to productions.
Our first staged reading was Ismene, a hilarious imagined sequel to Antigone by playwright/comedian Sam Crabtree. Next, the show that put us on the map was Georgia Mertching is Dead, a dark comedy directed by Laura Carswell and co-produced with Lauren James, Lucy Shelby, and Taylor Alden, performed at the Brooklyn Art Haus.
Since then, LRP has grown into a full independent theatre company, now in our second season. We are fiscally sponsored through Satellite Collective, a prestigious New York arts incubator, which means every donation to LRP is fully tax-deductible.
We still gather monthly for artist potlucks and play readings, exploring both new works in progress and existing plays that deserve a fresh look and a good room to live in for an evening.
